Long Term Planning

The Long Term Planning course will discuss concepts such as complementary feeding and weaning, appropriate diets for mother and baby, tandem breastfeeding, teething and biting, bed sharing and co-bathing, re-lactation and induced lactation (in instances such as adoption) and longer term breastfeeding (up to 2 years).

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course the participant should be able to:

  • define and discuss complementary feeding and weaning
  • discuss the importance of appropriate diet for mothers and babies
  • demonstrate knowledge of management of drugs and substances of concern and abuse
  • promote safe bed sharing and co-bathing
  • discuss with mothers the issues surrounding breastfeeding an older child during pregnancy, tandem feeding, teething and biting
  • demonstrate application of knowledge for mothers planning relactation and/or induced lactation in order to breastfeed after adoption, and
  • discuss with mothers the issues of breastfeeding on returning to work and continuing breastfeeding up to 2 years or more.

Target Audience

Any clinical or non-clinical employee of a health institution who is required to have an understanding of breastfeeding practice. This can include non-clinical staff (such as cleaners, cooks etc) through to nurses, midwives, doctors and lactation consultants.

Accreditation

This course has been endorsed by the Australian College of Midwives and attracts 1 MidPLUS and 1.5L CERPs point upon successful completion.
