Ethical Considerations

The Ethical Considerations course will promote the idea of engaging in ethical decision making using an appropriate framework, relating professional responsibilities to the International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) and the application of WHO and MAIF codes to clinical practice.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course the participant should be able to:

  • engage in consideration of ethical issues using an ethical decision-making framework within the guidelines of national and international codes of ethics for midwives
  • relate professional responsibility to the International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) Code of Ethics
  • apply International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA) Standards of Practice to clinical situations
  • apply the WHO and MAIF Codes to potential situations encountered in clinical practice, and
  • define responsibility regarding ethical issues such as conflict of interest, professional and client autonomy and advocacy, accountability, confidentiality, evidence-based practice and consent and decision-making.

Target Audience

Any clinical or non-clinical employee of a health institution who is required to have an understanding of breastfeeding practice. This can include non-clinical staff (such as cleaners, cooks etc) through to nurses, midwives, doctors and lactation consultants.

Accreditation

This course has been endorsed by the Australian College of Midwives and attracts 1 MidPLUS and 1E CERPs point upon successful completion.
